Interactive Information Visualization

Enrico Bertini at Visuale asks how important is interactivity in information visualization? As a proponent of QlikView, Spotfire, Tableau and others, I think it’s extremely important. Interactivity is the future, it’s “make or break.”

I’ve been implementing speed-of-thought interactive BI tools for 6 years and I don’t want to do it any other way. When I watched my first seasoned executive lose restraint and laugh uncontrollably as he got instant answers to his hardest questions, I knew this was the only way to go. When my end-user training sessions end late because everyone is so excited about what they can do, it’s clear that people NEED interactivity.

  1. Hi Jay, thanks for linking my post here.

I’m really interested to hear the voice of people delivering interactive visualizations to real world business and to know about their reaction.

Me, as a visualization researcher, have the strong feeling that we have gone too far with technical development and too short with the actual delivery of these techniques in the real world.

Sure, people is astounded, and for a good reason! But still we teach mainly how to visualize data, which is fundamental, and very few how to interact with them. It’s a pity.

By the way, I would be very curious to know something more about your experience with interactive visualizations in BI.

  2. Have a look at this demo on the QlikTech website about popular stories on Digg.com
